Saturday, January 28 is the 17th Annual Winter Trails Day! REI invites you to join in this national celebration of winter fun. At Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort, near Donner Summit, you'll find all kinds of free activities, designed to get you out in the snow. Thanks to vendors, you can demo snowshoes and cross country skis (on specified trails). REI Outdoor School will provide basic snowshoe instruction throughout the day; some sessions will be geared specifically to families. Royal Gorge will offer mini cross country ski lessons; space is limited, so advance registration is recommended at (530) 426-3871. REI staff will also teach you how to layer clothing appropriately to stay warm and dry. You'll have the opportunity to visit nonprofit organizations to find out about safe winter recreation and great places to explore on snowshoes or cross country skis. And, you can always stay overnight at one of the nearby lodges, such as Ice Lakes or Rainbow Lodges, for some cozy evenings by the fire.
